The Rutland wedding of Adrienne & Andrew was to be conducted at the Parish Church of St. Michael & All Angels, which nestles on the outskirts of the village of Loddington. The history books tell us that the village had been virtually destroyed by the plague, so when it came to rebuilding, most of this was done away from the village centre. Therefore the church could only be accessed through a gate, and then by a two hundred metre walk literally across a field. As a Rutland wedding photographer I was excited at the prospect of documenting their day, as I had not been there before.
Access was not the only challenge to this wedding, but there was no mains electricity to the church. Now I have photographed weddings in some dark venues, but this one was going to take place under gas lights. Even the organ has to be pumped by hand.
Adrienne leads a very busy life as a barrister and has been awarded ‘Queens Council’. So as you can imagine, not the easiest of people to make contact with. Prior to the wedding our only contact had been via a couple of emails and one brief telephone conversation. So turning up on the day, not having met either of them was rather strange.
Once all of the guest were inside the church, a Landrover Defender was spotted entering the field and I was told this is the bride arriving. So after a 10 second introduction to Adrienne, I took my position for the ceremony.
Following the lovely ceremony everyone made their way along some twisty country lanes to the farm where Andrew lives. The marquee that was to host their evening celebrations had been erected on land that had stunning views across the rolling Rutland countryside.
My coverage of this particular wedding was only until they sat down for a buffet style wedding breakfast, so I wandered around whilst documenting the guests enjoying drinks and nibbles outside, until I said my farewells.
Adrienne & Andrew were looking forward to spending a week in Greece for their honeymoon, and on their return left me this lovely review:
“Steve was fantastic. He did the photography for our wedding and we set him a real challenge! Our church is in a secluded rural location without a road leading to it and we had the reception on our farm in a marquee with 180 guests. We really hadn’t focused our minds on either what photographs we wanted or where. Steve did an amazing job in capturing the joyful church service and the celebratory but informal atmosphere of the day without being obvious. We were absolutely bowled over by the quality of the photographs and the way he expressed the experience in the sequence. We cannot recommend him highly enough for the quality of the work, the effort he put into planning it with a recce of the sites in advance and his incredible patience. The images were delivered quickly after the wedding. Professional, delightful to work with, creative and worth every penny. Thank you Steve for capturing our special day”.
